Yesterday evening my wife and I strolled through Offenbach am Main — the city we live in for almost 10 years now. That's a very long time for me to be in one spot but that's a topic for another time maybe.
Offenbach is home to a great Design university called hfg — Hochschule für Gestaltung and this years graduates are currently presenting their diploma work throughout the city.
An old church tower
The first exhibit we saw was setup in an old, barebones church tower that was just a remnant of the whole church it probably was attached to in previous times. Just standing there on the corner of a street, surrounded by hfg buildings.. never saw it before either.
The topic of the exhibit was about banshees and thinner places. Places were one can supposedly feel different realities or worlds be so close together that they almost start to diffuse into each other.
Movie on social media
In the main building we found a projector setup with a series of short films playing. One of them caught my attention right away.
The story goes like this:
- One of two inhabitants of a shared apartment comes out of his room after doom-scrolling for … a long time and finds a ball of bread dough sitting on the couch. To his surprise the ball of dough says "Hi"
- He calls his flat mate to show him the curiosity
- That guy — of course — pulls out his phone immediately to film the dough and put it on social media
- INterwebs loves the dough and they take more and more videos with the dough
- Dough starts to become super annoyed by all that and has nightmares about eyes following him
- Dough decides to jump in the over to bake itself into a bread
- They take another photo
All in all this made me happy because the fact that social media has the potential to harm your existence seems to be a known topic by now and one that people are rebelling against — even with art.
